Native American Telecom Enterprise, LLC was established by successful telecommunications veterans Gene DeJordy and Tom Reiman.Through the pioneering efforts of Gene and Tom: (1) the Oglala Sioux Tribe obtained near ubiquitous wireless service on the Pine Ridge reservation resulting in telephone penetration rates going from 25% to 90%; (2) rural areas in the U.S. obtained access to competitive telecommunications services for the first time through wireless local loop service offerings; (3) numerous reservations became eligible for universal service funding for wireless services for the first time, including service for as low as $1 per month; (4) the FCC recognized tribal sovereignty by approving, for the very first time, universal service designation for a joint venture between a tribe and a wireless carrier; (5) a historic agreement was entered into between a tribe and a private party providing for revenue sharing for telecommunications services and the right of the tribe to obtain ownership of the network, which Congress recognized in a signing ceremony on Capitol Hill; and (6) state governments and private parties recognized tribal sovereignty.Native American Telecom Enterprise, LLC builds upon these successes by establishing partnerships with Tribes for telecommunications ventures aimed at driving economic development on reservations that will, in turn, create jobs, provide greater access to information and social services, and enable business development necessary for long-term growth and prosperity.
